Meet Barbara Pontes – Our Newest Board Member

As reported by board president Karen Dwinell:

At our meeting last Tuesday, September 11th, the board nominated Barbara Pontes as our newest board member. She very graciously accepted. Barbara started as a dog walker (I did too!). She is a member of the dog adoption team and has computer and IT skills that will help keep Louise and I out of trouble.

Each month we will feature a member to find out more about their story and involvement with PAWS.

How did you initially get involved with PAWS?

I live just down the block from the center and remember watching the progress of the construction each week.  I wondered if it was going to be a firehouse, restaurant or what?  When I realized it would be an animal shelter I was pleasantly surprised.  So on one of my walks to the farmers market I stopped in to inquire if they needed any volunteers.  That’s how my involvement as a dog walker began.

What is your favorite ting about working with PAWS?

My favorite thing is to witness the transformation of the animals that come into the center to when they’re ready for adoption.  It’s lovely.

What is the most rewarding experience you have had and what made it so?When my husband and I spent time in Thailand filming the Akha Hill Tribe. They grow some of the finest coffee in the world. It’s a beautiful area high in the mountains above Chang Rai and the videos we were able to put together for them helped to tell their amazing story of struggle and success.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I’d love to go to Dubai. Many of my friends have been there and talk about what a wonderful place it has become. Plus it’s a great stepping stone to many other wonderful parts of the world.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

I think it would have to be jet skiing in the Amazon region of Brazil. The river is so incredibly wide with a strong current and because of the rise/fall of the water levels whole islands are submersed with only tops of trees showing.
